Terror suspect loses extradition fight
A man wanted for alleged involvement in the Madrid train bombings should be extradited to Spain, Britain's highest court decided Wednesday. Five Law Lords -- Britain's supreme appeal judges -- rejected arguments by lawyers fighting the extradition on behalf of Moutaz Almallah Dabas. Defense lawyers had argued that the European arrest warrant under which the Spanish citizen was detained was invalid because its wording did not comply with the requirements of the 2003 Extradition Act. Syrian-born Dabas was arrested in 2005 in Slough, west of London. An extradition warrant issued by Spain alleged that he helped manage a group of radical Muslims that included some of the Madrid bombers. He had previously appealed his extradition to Britain's Court of Appeal.
Madrid high court frees Basque leader
The Madrid High Court on Wednesday freed Arnaldo Otegi, leader of the Basque nationalist party Batasuna, after the state prosecutor dropped charges against him. Otegi was brought to Madrid earlier by plane after being arrested by hooded police, as he refused to make it to a court hearing because the roads were blocked by snow. The court on Wednesday dismissed the case against Otegi after the prosecutors, who had been demanding a jail term of 15 months for him, decided to drop the charges of "glorifying terrorism" against him. Addressing the court, the prosecutor acknowledged that it was "very doubtful" that the accusation against Otegi amounted to an "apology for terrorism." Otegi had expressed "his convictions in a complacent manner, but his discourse did not go beyond expressing an opinion that was possibly contentious but not criminal," the prosecutor said.
Real believe title up for grabs as leaders falter
MADRID (Reuters) - Real Madrid forward Robinho said his side now have the form and the belief to prevent leaders Barcelona claiming their third consecutive Primera Liga title. Third-placed Real beat Osasuna 2-0 at home on Sunday to close to within two points of arch-rivals Barca, who lost 1-0 away to Real Zaragoza on Saturday. Second-placed Sevilla also slipped up with a goalless draw at home to Racing Santander on Sunday, leaving them a point behind Barca and one ahead of Real with nine games left to play. "We are getting closer and closer to the top two, and after each game have more belief that we can win the title," Robinho was quoted as saying in the Spanish media on Monday. "If we continue playing with this enthusiasm and quality we will surely win the league." The starting point for Real's change in fortunes was the thrilling 3-3 draw against the champions in the Nou Camp last month.
