Spanair announces new Pamplona - Madrid Route

From 25 March, Spanair will link the city of Pamplona with Madrid, offering 3 daily flights from Monday to Friday, with times adapted to the requirements of business travellers, and one weekend flight each-way.

Spanair is thereby continuing with its expansion plan and increasing its already extensive network of domestic flights, facilitating passengers who fly the route with great connections with other destinations, both Spanish and international, via its hub in Madrid.

In addition, Spanair will connect the capital of Navarre with Tenerife Sur and Palma de Mallorca from 4 May and 6 June respectively, with a weekly flight especially oriented to leisure passengers.

"Spanair's launch of this route is part of our commitment to the Northern Metropolitan Area, and satisfies connection needs in the Region of Navarre.", stated Lars Nygaard, CEO of Spanair, who added that "We strongly expect to contribute to the development of Pamplona Airport by offering high quality services at very competitive rates".

Beckham out one month

David Beckham's return to form has taken a new twist — a bad twist of his right knee. The Los Angeles Galaxy-bound midfielder will be sidelined for about a month after hurting a knee ligament during a Spanish League game last weekend, an injury that eliminated his chance of being recalled to England's national team for upcoming European Championship qualifiers.

The 31-year-old hurt his right knee during Real Madrid's 1-1 tie with Getafe on Sunday when his momentum following a cross took him into an advertising sign behind the goal.

Spain to stage new Euro Tour event

Spain will host five events on the 2007 European Tour schedule after the launch of the Andalucia Open.

The new tournament will take place at the Aloha Golf Club from May 10-13 with a prize fund of $1.32 million, the tour said in a news release.

The Andalucia Open joins the Spanish Open, Madrid Open, Mallorca Classic and season-ending Volvo Masters in Valderrama on the schedule.

The two main sponsors have agreed to back the new tournament for three years.

The 6,882-yard Aloha club boasts European Tour winners Miguel Angel Jimenez and Diego Borrego as honorary members and has hosted several top competitions in its 32-year history, notably the 1978 Spanish amateur championship.

The course may not be the longest on tour but, with narrow fairways and water hazards encroaching on seven holes, including the demanding uphill par-four 18th, accuracy from the tee will be paramount.

ETA says ready for peace if 'Spanish attacks' stop

The armed Basque separatist group ETA said yesterday it was ready to make new commitments to the troubled peace process if the Spanish state stopped its "attacks" in the Basque region.

An interview published in the Basque language newspaper Gara was the group's first statement since January, when ETA guerrillas claimed responsibility for a car bomb that killed two people at Madrid airport.

Many ETA members have been arrested in the Basque region, the group's heartland, in a new government offensive in the wake of the January bomb.

The group blamed the Socialist government and the moderate Basque Nationalist Party for the blockage of the peace process, and said it was "time to act responsibly."

It said it was still committed to a real democratic solution to the Basque conflict and stood by its ceasefire declaration of March 2006.
